International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam
A virtual venue for an international film festival
In 2020, at the height of Covid-19 lockdowns, a European film festival approached me to build a virtual venue where audiences could safely meet in VR to experience documentary films and experiences. A German Bauhaus theme drove the design for both the environment and custom avatars. The resulting experience hosted hundreds of attendees from all over the world and allowed the film festival to continue operation despite the lockdown.
I was responsible for the design and creation of the environment using the platform VR Chat. I used the simple, playful shapes of Bauhaus-designed toys to inspire an environment that would be fun to explore while encouraging social interaction. The space features several gathering areas, immersive pods where visitors could experience that year’s nominated films, and several hidden passageways that encourage further exploration of the environment.
